"Portas" easily showcases Marisa's ability to blend together a diverse range of genres with a style and smoothness that only comes from the expertise she has gathered throughout her celebrated career. The album maintains a consistent backdrop of soulful vocals that harmonize with the subtle details of Marisa navigating through various subject matters. Some elements are stripped down and acoustic, intertwined gracefully with the more lively and produced tracks. The album feels intricate and meticulously crafted to capture every aspect that fans have come to anticipate from her, while also pushing the boundaries and blending genres.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the album "Portas" was recorded, mixed, and mastered using remote recordings from Rio de Janeiro, Lisbon, Los Angeles, and New York. Marisa shares her experience by stating, “It all worked out without many difficulties, and it's something we wouldn't have attempted if we could travel and meet in person. However, due to the impossibility of doing so physically, we ended up creating something that I believe we will continue to do (remotely) because it truly works."
The visual concept of the album, including its artwork, was developed by the Brazilian painter Marcela Cantuária. Marisa remarks, “It became an audio-visual dialogue between two contemporary women, using their sensitivity in service of art. I believe she captured me and all these songs beautifully in her artwork. She elevated all the tracks and my expression beyond my imagination.”
Having already received numerous prestigious awards throughout her artistic career, the announcement of this album has left fans eagerly awaiting its release. In addition to her four Latin Grammy wins, she has notably collaborated with Talking Heads frontman David Byrne and has sold over 15 million albums worldwide. With a career spanning over thirty years, she is considered the greatest Brazilian singer of her generation, known for the creative power of her live performances and the consistent excellence of her entire discography – the new album being no different.
