We Love The West Coast What would jazz be today without the musicians and clubs of mid-20th century California? ItËœs hard to imagine. Typical of the West Coast Jazz is a light, lyrical melody and a relaxed, loose rhythm, often characterized by intricate, polyrhythmic drumming. The style was a reaction to the bebop style that had emerged on the East Coast of the United States. West Coast musicians were influenced by the big bands and swing music of the 1930s and 1940s and wanted to create a less complex, more accessible style that was suitable for a wider audience. The musicians often used instruments such as the flugelhorn, trombone, and baritone saxophone to create a mellow, chamber music sound. West Coast Jazz had a great influence on the development of cool jazz and on the fusion of jazz with other musical styles such as rock and pop. Even today, the style has numerous fans and is used by many musicians as a source of inspiration. A 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. B 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
