Part of the fun with a new Thomas Brinkmann release is trying to guess precisely which Brinkmann he'll be this time around. Across the course of a laudable discography, the man's used his originality and intelligence to ta ckle everything from Profan-style minimal, k-hole house, turntable conceptualism and downtempo goth. Brinkmann's latest for Curle features three club-ready cuts that hew towards techno territory while consistently betraying his outsider sen se of humor. The deadpan voice that intoned all over 2008's When Horses Die is b ack in full effect on the title cut, its near-comic menace backed by an uptempo tech groove that sounds like an EBM track sanded down into round, digital pulsat ions. The effect is simultaneously sinister and playful, like a Halloween club n ight. Brinkmann's storied production wizardry doesn't fail him?the mix is full, balanced and inventive, with surprise blips of sound from all across the stereo field. Plus I really feel like the little background voice is whispering "Satan! , and the fact that I'm not sure about this only makes it more unsettling. It's|No a good reminder to stay on your toes when absorbing a Brinkmann tune. "Rumpf" p lays the German minimal card with confidence. Lively and brisk-paced, the track' s full of little ephemeral easter eggs, flickering effects, spectral flutter. At the last minute things expand into fist-pump territory without warning, before just as abruptly shutting down and diving into a lake?as if you've been chilling by the waterside and just taken your headphones off. Closer "Cheap Little Rat" wins points straight out the box for sampling old Bill Burroughs, his unmistakab ly creaky voice conjuring up a beatnik junkie nightmare via a little spoken-word piece called "Burroughs Called the Law." The funkiest cut on offer here, with p unchy, big booty swagger, the tune holds back at first to let Burroughs do the w ork, unfolding the inherently musical qualities of his drone and drawl. Then Bur roughs retreats into the phantomic underground from whence he came and Brinkmann lets the rats out of the bag, expanding the rhythmic scamper and clatter, at on e point slicing and dicing the track with face-melting speed, and generally havi ng a go at it. Not a bad soundtrack for the old Dream Machine.

review in Groove 122:
(AW)

Phili p Sherburne (The Wire, Resident Advisor): sweet! brinkmann's back in classic for m... three great tracks -- love the wonky bass of "walk with me" and the fucked- up beat of "cheap little rat," while "rumpf" is a kind of mania in miniature.... killer.

Benoit (Tsugi mag France): nice release, like it
Tomaz (Belgian national radio Switch): Hard to pick a favourite. Three solid tracks. T wisted techno. Great!
Morpheus (Freezone): really dig the walk with me and the mad cheap little rat, both excellent stuff. will play on my radio show, tnx!
Ed & Kim (Belgian national radio Switch): I like Rumpf & Cheap Little Rat! 'cheap little rat' is the strongest, great vocals, surprising little sounds
