Following on from Luciano, Ewan Pearson, Alex Smoke and Funk D™Void, Soma label bosses Slam are next in line for the Sci-Fi Hi-Fi series. Their mix is a heady blend of forward-thinking, mind-bending organic, groove-based techno, starting with their trademark deep spacey sonic tones and building in intensity throughout, taking in influences from minimal to Latin beats and even some disco, all progressing along a winding road of crisp beats and dark bass. Slam, to many, need no introduction. They have been at the forefront of the UK house and techno scene from the start, and with a cocktail of epic productions, thunderous club nights and an uncanny ability to hunt out new talent, they still manage to stay relevant in a scene that is forever growing and changing. Sci-Fi 5 is their first DJ mix in two years and in that time the pair have been busy promoting their 4th studio album Human Response, touring and playing their dynamic DJ sets at many of the world™s leading clubs and festivals. This surge in activity has put them in demand as remixers with big names such as Sasha, Unkle and Radio Slave calling on their services to add their unique blend of electronic soul to their tracks. With Soma they have been kept quite firmly on their toes, sourcing no less than 10 new artists for their imprint this year, two of whom appear on this disc. Jandroide and Decimal are both new names to watch in the Soma stable and are here represented by their forthcoming releases Grande Coracion and Eleanor respectively. The boys are also due to set up a new 12› label, Paragraph, which has already gathered some considerable DJ support. Paragraph brings the focus right back to basics, giving Stuart and Orde a chance to explore weirder sounds and discover new areas of electronica, putting the emphasis firmly back on their own productions. The first single City Destroyer (already receiving plays from the likes of Hawtin and Beyer), and the second release, What™s On Your Mind?, are just a taster of what™s to come from the label in the future. Both can be heard here exclusively in the mix. On top of all this the pair are organising their 12th Slam Tent at T In The Park in the same year that they also celebrate the 10th anniversary of their legendary club night Pressure, the monthly extravaganza at The Arches that™s on every discerning DJs wish list to play. Throughout all that the pair have been constantly sourcing new music, eagerly anticipating the moment when an albums-worth of new tracks would really excite them to compile another mix CD. šThis mix is tribute to our Return To Mono night at the Sub Club in Glasgow,› says Orde, šsome of the biggest records from the night feature. For us it was important that all the tracks were carefully selected, so we haven™t shied away from some older tracks that are big in character and in our DJ sets.› ›This is as near to what we would do in a club as you can get on one CD,š adds Stuart. šWe also wanted to include some new, unreleased Slam material by way of an exclusive before they™re actually pressed up on vinyl later this year›.
