Still Flyin™ emerged from San Francisco as a much loved indie-party band, who quickly became one of the most unique, must-see live shows in the Bay Area. Averaging 15 members, Still Flyin' have always had a taste for the unexpected. The bands new EP A Party In Motion set for release October 4th on Moshi Moshi sees them shed their well-worn reggae outer-garments in favour of something a whole lot NEU!er. The opener Victory Walker (2AM) immediately flies the flag for the band™s stylistic rebirth and is well fit for the pomp of synth-pop. Second track Bull Riff sprawls with a minute-plus introduction and is almost unrecognisable as a Still Flyin' track; we are eventually clued in when Sean Rawls' familiar vocal picks up the story and leads us into the latest of his trademark mirthful allegories. Strength is up next, and continues to flesh out new ideas while demonstrating a general disregard for standard pop structures. As with the Still Flyin' of old, the whole EP is peppered with chants, interjections and counter-choruses from the Flyinettes, while lead vocals are at times swapped up with percussionist (and Rawls' former Masters of the Hemisphere bandmate) Bren Mead. Stay Wild, Tokelau is another glorious pop song where shimmering guitar riffs offset fluttering vocals about the World Wide Web. The single lyric of Neu Idea drips with harmonies as it floats by like a cool summer breeze. Victory Walker (6AM) is a psychedelic, slowed down, tripped out rework of the EP opener. Final track Higher Than Five ž is a proud "life jam" that sees Rawls in reflective mode, pondering the chosen ideologies of his existence. Led by the kind of bubbling bassline we could all use in times like these, the song rises to a crescendo of mountainous guitars, horns and Flyinettes. Known across the spheres for their uplifting party jams, unhinged stage show and general sense of throw-down, the gargantuan San Franciscan collective (at times featuring members of Architecture in Helsinki and The Lucksmiths) have adopted a more pulsating, repetitive backdrop on these seven songs to match their newfound urge to roll the melodies out one-by-one, layer upon layer, making for an epic listen and an even more epic dance party. Under the guidance of producer Haima Marriott (AiH), Still Flyin' have bravely leapt from their comfort zone, while keeping their carefree "hammjamm" credo intact.
