Tracklisting A/B: James Holden & Camilo Tirado Outdoor Museum of Fractals C/D: Luke Abbott 555Hz Border Community™s eager improvisers James Holden and Luke Abbott flirt with the New Age in this split double LP, with a pair of extended synth meditations indulging their respective loves of arpeggio and drone, originally composed for the occasion of Terry Riley's 80th birthday. Holden™s Outdoor Museum of Fractals fuses the endlessly unfolding fractal complexity of luxurious washes of arpeggiations with the pitched tabla drumming of Camilo Tirado, co-pilot on this hypnotic, meditative journey. Abbott™s metallic gong-drone offering 555Hz layers this mystical frequency and its related harmonics in a sequence of transportive wave-like swells. Running to over 45 and 30 minutes apiece in digital form but split in two to fit on the vinyl, the double 12› heavyweight vinyl also includes uninterrupted digital download codes. Extending to over 45 minutes and 30 minutes apiece in their digital form, the double 12› vinyl edition gently fades each composition around the halfway mark to fit over both sides of its own vinyl disc, as the act of flipping the record over becomes part of the zen ritual of contemplative listening. (Bonus codes for the uninterrupted full length digital download are also included for your convenience). The complementary pieces Outdoor Museum of Fractals and 555Hz were originally conceived in response to a brief from London's Barbican and Amsterdam's Muziekgebouw venues, who in April 2015 invited Holden and Abbott to participate in their Hello Terry Riley joint event in celebration of American minimalist Terry Riley's 80th birthday. Taking their inspiration as much from Riley's rigorous compositional methodology as from the zen-like atmosphere and spirit of his works, Holden and Abbott's goal was not to create carbon copy soundalikes of the Riley cannon, but rather to immerse themselves in the challenge of writing the same type of hypnotic, slowly unfolding linear music as championed by Riley, in direct contrast to the ubiquitous peaks and drops of the Western classical and popular musical paradigms. This gentle, contemplative juxtaposition of Outdoor Museum of Fractals and 555Hz furthers Holden and Abbott's personal commitments to the cause of improvised live electronic performance, standing as a quiet resistance in a world which so often turns to light shows, video playbacks and all manner of other set piece gimmickry in lieu of any kind of genuine live musical performance. The tactile interfaces and other technological developments which have emerged in recent years have enabled a new level of spontaneous expression within the once rigid loop-based grid structures of electronic music, and here at Border Community we see it as our personal mission to support those who put this new world of improvisational potential to good use.
