Growing up in a rural community, she found her love of music in the church choir. In St. Louis, she met Ike Turner, with whom she joined his band “Kings of Rhythm” as a backing singer in 1957. She quickly moved into the limelight and adopted the stage name Tina Turner. The 1960s and early 1970s brought the duo Ike & Tina Turner great success with hits such as “Proud Mary” and “Nutbush City Limits”. But behind the scenes, Tina suffered from Ike Turner's abuse. In 1976, she left him and began her solo career. Her breakthrough came in 1984 with the album “Private Dancer”, which contained hits such as “What's Love Got to Do with It” and won her several Grammys. She became one of the most successful female rock artists in history. In the 1990s and 2000s, Tina Turner continued her career and released her last album “Twenty Four Seven” in 1999. Her autobiography “I, Tina” inspired the film “What's Love Got to Do with It”. In her later years, she found peace with her husband Erwin Bach in Switzerland. Tina Turner passed away on May 24, 2023, leaving behind an unforgettable legacy in music history. Her career is an example of change, resilience and the power of music. “You're simply the best”, as she herself sang - a fitting farewell for an extraordinary artist.
